We have updated the SEN Information Proforma as two sections were omitted in the original. One asked schools to report on how they evaluate the effectiveness of the provision made for children and young people with SEN and the other asked about the arrangements for consulting young people with SEN and involving them in their education.

This briefing identifies action taken by the Rochford Review to ensure that attainment and progress is measured for pupils who will be working below the standard of the National Curriculum tests at the end of KS1 and KS2. These will be referred to as Interim Pre-Key Stage Standards; there is one Interim Pre-Key Stage Standard at KS1 and three Interim Pre-Key Stage Standards at KS2; each one containing a number of positive 'pupil can' statements.
From Summer 2016 all pupils at the end of KS2 will undergo an online test of their ability to recall their times tables up to 12 x 12. Not all pupils will find committing their times table to memory to be an achievable task, particularly those with special needs and/or disabilities. The DfE issued a revised draft SEND Code of Practice on 16th April. This briefing picks out the main points for schools in order to provide an overview of the changes that are due to be implemented from Sept 2014. Download here.

The Education (Special Needs Co-ordinators) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2009 made it law for every new SENCo in a mainstream school to gain a Master-level National Award for Special Educational Needs Co-ordination within three years of taking up the post. On 23rd May the DfE announced that a further round of funding, for an additional 800 places for the 2013 to 2014 academic year, on the National Award for SEN Co-ordination. The website states "We will shortly announce further details on how interested individuals can apply for a funding place. In the meantime please contact your chosen training provider."

A new approach to special educational needs and disability. A consultation DfE. This Green Paper, launched by the Department for Education in March 2011, sets the direction of travel for SEN and disability provision for at least the next decade but potentially much longer. As such, all those with an interest in SEN need to be aware of its contents to be able to respond to the consultation that concludes on 30th June.
An extended version of the article on Progression Guidance which appeared in the October 2010 issue of SNIP has been added to the website to facilitate easy location of specific tables and to promote awareness-raising with colleagues.

The list was originally developed to identify downloadable software to promote home access to computers for pupils with a disability. It includes information on read aloud software, utilities for keyboards, mouse cursors and toolbars, adaptations for screens etc. Available on the downloads page.
